Lors de l'hiver 1911, l'asile d'aliénés de Sharston, dans le Yorkshire, accueille une nouvelle pensionnaire : Ella, qui a brisé une vitre de la filature dans laquelle elle travaillait depuis l'enfance. Si elle espère d'abord être rapidement libérée, elle finit par s'habituer à la routine de l'institution. Hommes et femmes travaillent et vivent chacun de leur côté : les hommes cultivent la terre tandis que les femmes accomplissent leurs tâches à l'intérieur.
Ils sont néanmoins réunis chaque vendredi dans une somptueuse salle de bal. Ella y retrouvera John, un "mélancolique irlandais". Tous deux danseront, toujours plus fébriles et plus épris. A la tête de l'orchestre, le docteur Fuller observe ses patients valser. Séduit par l'eugénisme et par le projet de loi sur le Contrôle des faibles d'esprit, Fuller a de grands projets pour guérir les malades. Projets qui pourraient avoir des conséquences désastreuses pour Ella et John.
